11:00 Filipe Duarte Pina (Nerd Monkeys, Portugal) – What is good game design?

FilipePina

Videogames have always been a big part of my life. I have been working in or around videogames in one way or another since 1999. I started out doing some 3D works and small mods. In 2006 I co-founded and co-managed Seed Studios where we produced several games including Toy Shop Tycoon and Aquatic Tales for the Nintendo DS. In 2011, Under Siege for the PlayStation3 was created. I was published in more than 60 countries in six different languages and was awarded the ZON Grand Prize Award, the ZON Multimedia Award and the Exame Informática Best Software of 2011. In 2013 I directed, wrote and co-produced Murder in the Hotel Lisbon for Windows, Mac and Linux for my newly created company, Nerd Monkeys. In 2015 we re-launched it for iOS and Android devices. Since 2014 I have also been working with Science4You to create several educational videogames like Micro Dinos and Sparks – Mega Quiz. I am currently working on my next videogame in my office of Nerd Monkeys located inside “The Lisbon Studio”, in Portugal.

15:00 Katharine Neil (Lady Shotgun Games, Francja) – Making games in a time of crisis

katherine

In Europe we’re living through a period of economic, social and environmental crisis. I use anecdotes and experiences from a career in game development to talk about what it means to be making games in a time of crisis: how it affects the way we as game developers live and work, and the kind of games we make.

Katharine has enjoyed a long career in game development, with game credits that include 16 console titles and 3 mobile titles. As a game designer, programmer and sound designer her experience has ranged from creating audio for racing games to writing narrative for kids’ DS titles. She also led the development of one of the first social impact games – “Escape From Woomera” – a game about the plight of asylum-seekers living in detention centres in Australia, and is co-founder of Freeplay, Australia’s annual independent games festival.

16:00 Sos Sosowski (McPixel, Polska) – Krótka historia narzędzi do tworzenia gier

sos

Sos is a walking legend of Polish indie game scene. He describes himself as a mad scientist of video games. He is the creator of Thelemite (2011) and McPixel (2012) and many other games you have never heard of. Last but not least, he is a hopeless game jam addict. So no surprise he is involved in the Komiks Game Jam since the very beginning of our initiative last year.

17:00 Magdalena Cielecka (Artifex Mundi, Polska) – Cyfrowe zakochanie – mechaniki budowania relacji z NPC

magda

Magdalena Cielecka is a doctoral student at the Institute of Audiovisual Arts at the Jagiellonian University, member of the Games Research Association of Poland and producer at Artifex Mundi, a studio internationally renowned for their adventure games. Cielecka’s research interests lie between the history of adventure games and designing the protagonist-player relationship. She was behind the editorial series Anatomia Gier (The Anatomy of Games) at Gram.pl and the video series Ludovlogia (Ludovlogy) on her youtube channel. In Artifex Mundi she was responsible, among others, for production of the “Clockwork Tales: Of Glass and Ink” and “Grim Legends 2: Song of the Dark Swan”. She’s not waiting for the Citizen Kane of video games. If she’s not currently playing some obscure, yet compelling game, she’s most likely tackling another BioWare production.
